CHAPTER 14

As soon as she put the phone back in her coat pocket, she got a call. Gretel kept walking and took the phone out of her pocket. She glanced down and saw from the caller ID it was her sister. “Hi, how are you?”

“Fine. Are you coming to mom and dad’s fortieth anniversary celebration next week? You haven’t RSVP’d.”

“No. I already told you I’m not coming. I didn’t know I’d have to send an official notice. Me declining the invitation by not replying was an implied—”

“Aw, c’mon, Gretel. You’re being ridiculous. They want to see you.”

“I highly doubt that.”

“Of course they do. Don’t you think it’s time to bury the hatchet? They’ve been asking about you.”

“They might’ve been asking, but neither of them cares. You’re the only family I have now.”

“Don’t say that.”

“It’s true. I don’t need any of them. None of them stood by me.”

“That’s because they didn’t like what you were doing.”

“So judgmental of them. Don’t they know it’s a sin to judge?”

Hazel groaned. “You know it was wrong.”

“Wrong and right are social constructs. Didn’t you learn anything at college? I’ve already told you, no one suffered from what I did. I never took anything from a private citizen and all the big places are insured to the eyeballs.”

“What about the insurance companies?” Hazel asked.

“Bah, they’ve already got too much money.”

“You’ve got an answer for everything, Gretel. I’ll leave you alone. Come if you want. I’m tired of asking.”

“Now you’re starting to sound like mom. Gotta go.” Gretel turned her phone on silent and slipped it into her coat pocket just as she stepped into the back alley behind Jackson Forsitto’s high-end jewelry store.

Jackson was most likely to be found in the back room where he sorted diamonds or designed jewelry for his two stores. She pressed the buzzer and he quickly opened the door for her.

“I’m surprised to see you back so soon.”

As soon as they sat in his office, she asked, “What do you know about someone by the name of Patrick O’Grady?”

His eyes flickered. “I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of anyone by that name.”

“Are you sure?”

He nodded. “Why?”

“He’s connected to the necklace, and he’s Romanian.”

His left eye twitched. “That’s a funny name for a Romanian.”

“He changed his name years ago to O’Grady. He was Jill’s uncle.”

“The dead woman from the board of the museum?” Forsitto asked.

At that moment, Gretel knew he was lying and doing a dreadful job of it. “What other Jill have we been talking about? C’mon. I know you know more than you’re saying. Tell me everything you know about this. You said you owe me one. Don’t hold out.”

Forsitto sucked in his lips and got up, opened his door, and looked out. Then he closed the door and locked it. “What I am about to say to you can’t go any further.”
